Captain's Log
August 14, 2008
In July we had a four person charter (two brothers and their two children) on our way to Stellwagen Bank for tuna. On the way out we spotted tuna feeding on the surface. I made two casts, and we hooked up! I gave the rod to one of the brothers, who proceeded to fight the fish for about 45 minutes before fatigue forced him to pass the rod to his brother. The fight continued for another hour before the fish (and fisherman) reached the end of their stamina, and I was able to gaff the fish and bring it on board. The tuna measured 56 inches and weighed 110 lbs! There were more tuna around, but we were all out of time (and stamina). July 15, 2008 The small tuna are still out there, we just have
to travel further out to get them... to Stellwagen Bank and beyond to the Boston
shipping lanes some 18 miles off Race Point. This is quite a haul, but
still well within our range. June 14, 2008 It's June and the tuna have arrived -- big time! On the backside, off Peaked Hill Bar, we found schools of tuna balling up herring and porgies at the surface. Someone cast with a light bass rod and all the line disappeared in a flash! We went to large tuna rods had soon hooked up 4 times and landed two100 lb beauties. Stripers are also plentiful, with forty plus pounders appearing. It looks like a great season shaping up! The whales have moved out of the bay, but continue to put on beautiful shows outside. April 30, 2008 It has been a big month for whales! A rare gathering of some 100 right whales provided some wonderful shows both from the beach and the water. Boats were restricted to 10 mph is areas where the whales were feeding. We went out to see first hand and got some nice photos. Click here to see a few of them. Why not book a private whale watching trip with us this summer. February 1, 2008 The 2007 fishing season on Cape Cod will be remembered as the year when small tuna fishing hit its stride. It started when Capt. Bobby Rice caught the first tuna of the season on June 8, 2007. Capt. Eric Morea aboard the Silver Hawk marked the close of the season when he boated a tuna on November 9, 2007. What a season! The Cod may not be the top target of sport fishermen based on fight, but are consistent a favorite at the diner table. Despite the winter chill now visiting the Cape, cod fish are our there, waiting for Spring charters. A friend reports he landed Cod in January! Schooney Fishing Charters will kick off the sport fishing season for Cod on April 1. Call or email now to book a charter. Here is some handy information on limits for the upcoming season: Fish Minimum Length Maximum Catch per Day Small Tuna 47" 2 per boat Stripe Bass 28" 2 per person Cod 22' 7 per person Fluke 17" 7 per person Use the "Contact Us" page to make suggestions, report news, pose questions, or to book a charter.
